German or Bearded Iris have been cultivated since 1000 BC and first cited in American literature in 1672. Jefferson referred to iris as “flags,” a term still used today. The development of Bearded Iris began in the 19th century and continues to this day. The “beard” is the patch of hairs extending down the three lower petals (“falls”), below the three upper petals (“standards”). ‘Monterey’ was released in 1929 as a Mohr-Mitchell introduction; the development of this cultivar was initiated by William Mohr and completed by Sydney B. Mitchell after his death. Both men were plant breeders in the San Francisco area.

Plants arrive as bare root rhizomes. Not recommended for zones 5 and below due to late September shipping dates. Plant immediately upon receipt following the planting instructions included in shipping.
