Black Willow, the tallest of the willow species, is commonly used in soil stabilization and erosion control projects, especially along riparian zones. This native tree grows along the banks of streams, marshland, and lakes from Maine to Minnesota, south to Colorado, Texas and Florida. Jefferson included the genus Salix in his book, Notes on the State of Virginia. During the Revolutionary War the wood of the Black Willow was made into charcoal and used to make gunpowder.
