Vanhoutte Spirea is a showy member of the rose family developed near Paris about 1862 by the crossing of two Asian species, Spiraea cantoniensis and S. trilobata, and soon became popular throughout North America. The spireas, or bridal wreaths, are noted for their graceful form, vigor, and toughness, often surviving in abandoned home-sites for years. By the end of the 19th century, some 80 species and many natural hybrids of spirea were available.
